The Upper Midwest Region of the Classic Car Club invites you to join us on the Frontier CARavan starting September 18, 2022 thru September 26, 2022.
Sunday/Monday, September 18 – 19th - Rapid City, SD
The tour begins in Rapid City, South Dakota. We will stay at the historic Alex Johnson Hotel which has been open to the public since 1928. This art-deco hotel is still the choice for guests wanting to experience the charm and luxury of that period.
The Badlands are a short drive east of Rapid City. Rugged stone formations rich in fossils and wildlife abound. On Monday we will drive through the Badlands and then off to Wall Drug for lunch. Learn how a family built an iconic tourist destination by offering free ice water to travelers. We will also have a historic train ride in the Black Hills.
Tuesday/Wednesday, September 20 – 21st - Deadwood, SD
On Tuesday we leave the Alex Johnson for sites in the southern hills. One can choose Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and/or several scenic highways. We will meet at the Alpine Inn in Hill City for lunch. Then we are off to the northern hills for our night accommodations in Deadwood.
We stay Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Deadwood. Wednesday will be a free day. Our hotel is the Deadwood Mountain Grand located just off the historic Main Street. You may choose to explore the historic hotels, gamble, enjoy good food and visit the museums. You may opt to drive the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway to enjoy the fall colors.
Thursday, September 22nd - Billings, Montana
On Thursday we leave Deadwood headed to the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument. Here on June 25th and June 26th 1876, the 7th Calvary led by General George Custer died in a clash with several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne warriors led by Chief Sitting Bull. This is our most ambitious travel day through a region with very few amenities. There will be stops for rest and lunch. Upon leaving the Battlefield, it is a short trip to the Double Tree Hotel in Billings, Montana.
Friday/Saturday, September 23 – 24th – Cody, Wyoming
On Friday we depart Billings and set our destination to Cody, Wyoming. Weather permitting, 68.7 miles of our route will be over the Beartooth Highway. Rising 10,947 feet above sea level, this has been described by some as the most beautiful drive in America. This is a shorter travel day as we descend into Cody.
In Cody we will stay at the Buffalo Bill Village both Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday will be a free day. Options for your enjoyment include the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Buffalo Bill Dam over the Shoshone River or a short drive to the east entrance of Yellowstone Park. Saturday night dinner will be a home style buffet at the Cody Cattle Company with live country music.
Sunday, September 25th – Sheridan, Wyoming
Sunday morning we are off to Sheridan, Wyoming. Highway 14A takes us over Lovell Pass and the Big Horn Mountains. Accommodations will split between the Historic Sheridan Inn and the Best Western Sheridan Center. All 22 rooms have been reserved at the Sheridan Inn. The nearby Best Western will provide the balance of rooms needed. Hotel reservations will be on a first come basis for the Historic Inn. A visit to the Don King Saddle and Rope Museum offers a glimpse of life in the old west.
Monday, September 26th, Rapid City, SD
Monday morning we leave Sheridan for Rapid City and our host hotel the Alex Johnson. We will travel Highway 14, a beautiful drive to Gillette, Wyoming, and we will also visit Devils Tower National Monument which will be our last Frontier tour stop. The tower is a butte that rises out of the ground for 867 feet. It is considered sacred to the northern plains tribes. In 1906 then President Theodore Roosevelt established it as a national monument. Monday evening we will have our farewell banquet at the Alex Johnson Hotel.
