The “Southern Spring” CARavan will be an affordable hub tour out of Thomasville, GA, about a half-hour north of Tallahassee. This CARavan is for Classics manufactured in 1937 and older. The date is March 5-12, 2011, and our hotel is the brand new Rose City Inn and Conference Center. It has all the amenities, including parking for our trailers. We’ve negotiated a very attractive rate of less than $100.00 a night.
More than a century ago, Thomasville was celebrated as one of the most fashionable places in the world to visit. During the Victorian Era, many wealthy northerners traveled by railway to enjoy Thomasville as their grand winter resort. The era quickly faded, but more than 50 grand historic homes still grace its streets. As a group, we’ll tour Pebble Hill Plantation(pictured at left), built in the 1820s and owned by the famous Hanna Family of Cleveland. It is the only plantation of its kind open to the public.
We’ll tour beautiful back roads, loaded with peanut and pecan plantations, to Wakulla Springs, the deepest spring in Florida, where we’ll not only have lunch in its Tudor lodge, but enjoy a narrated jungle cruise.
We’ll travel to one of the U.S.s finest private collection of rare antique automobiles and collectibles, the Tallahassee Antique Car Museum, as well as two other very interesting private car collections. We’ve been invited to take a tour of a private collection of over 200 restored old gasoline pumps.
A tour of the seldom viewed and fascinating National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (the only one of its kind in the Western Hemisphere) is on our agenda. The magnets made there offer the highest magnetic fields for use by the international community. Their magnets (many unrivalled anywhere in the world) and experimental techniques are highly specialized, yet broadly applicable to research in physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and even biomedicine.
There’ll be lots of good old southern eating and a great night at one of the oldest country clubs in the nation.
Come enjoy touring in your older Classic, and when the CARavan is finished, you can take the short hop to the Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance.
The activity fee will be in the $500s per person.
